Functional hallux limitus is a common problem in runners but is often unrecognised. Functional hallux limitus causes gait and running style compensations that may lead to injury. It is a limitation or restriction in smooth motion at the big toe joint of the foot. We use that joint to pivot forward over when running, so you can imagine that if the joint does not work properly, then moving forward is not going to be very efficient. Most cases of functional hallux limitus are easily managed with a good pair of foot orthotics to facilitate normal motion at the joint. Brooks even had a running shoe in the 1980’s that was specifically designed for runners with functional hallux limitus.
